Pregnancy! is the start of an incredible and wonderful journey which the family goes in.
The nine months of pregnancy are filled with choices and decisions. These include decisions about exercise, clothing, prenatal care providers and birth location. Pregnancy and the childbirth are regarded by most women as one of their most memorable experiences. Being well informed about the options can help provide the gratifying experience that a women and her family desire.
Exploring birth options can feel overwhelming. In a matter of months, a mother along with her need to sift through options and opinions and come to conclusions—no easy feat. So we start by educating the expected couples along with their family members on the basics: the different types of birth methods, intervention techniques, providers, and philosophies that are available to a mother.
We provide quality healthcare services in International Standards. In their pursuit for quality benchmarks in healthcare delivery, we strictly adhere to Ethical Practices in their professional conduct, ensure transparency in their dealings with patients and guarantees confidentiality of treatment related information.
The goal of this checkup is to find things that could affect your pregnancy. Identifying these factors before pregnancy allows you to take steps that can increase the chances of having a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. During this visit, your healthcare provider will ask about your diet and lifestyle, your medical and family history, medications you take, and any past pregnancy complications, postnatal period, feelings & emotion, relationship and about family support.
If you are planning to become pregnant, it is a good idea to have a preconception care checkup. The first 8 weeks of pregnancy are key for the baby growing inside you. Your health and nutrition can affect your baby’s growth and development in these early weeks.
To be sure that your diet gives you enough nutrients, you need to know which ones are in the foods you eat. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food-planning guide called My Plate (www.choosemyplate.gov) can help you make healthy food choices. My Plate takes into account your age, sex, and how much you exercise every day.
Excess weight during pregnancy is associated with several pregnancy and childbirth complications, including high blood, pressure, preeclampsia, preterm birth, and gestational diabetes, Obesity during pregnancy also is associated with macrosomia, defined as a larger than normal baby, as well as an increased risk of Birth injury and cesarean delivery. It also increases the risk of birth defects, especially neural tube defects (NTDs). . Having too much body fat may make it more difficult for your healthcare provider to monitor your baby with ultrasound and to hear the baby’s heartbeat.
To lose weight, you need to use up more Calories than you take in. The best way to lose weight is by making a few changes in your diet and by being more physically active. Cutting back on the number of calories you consume is a good first step. Exercise burns calories and helps you lose weight. In certain situations, medications or weight-loss surgery can be considered.
Being underweight also poses risks during pregnancy. It increases the risk of having a low birth weight baby. These babies are at risk of problems during labor and may have health and behavioral problems that last into childhood and adulthood. Being underweight during pregnancy also increases the risk of preterm birth.
Some medical conditions—such as diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, and seizure disorders—can cause problems during pregnancy. If you have a medical condition, your healthcare provider will discuss with you the changes that you need to make in order to bring your condition under control before you try to get pregnant.
Some medications, including vitamin supplements, over-the-counter medications, and herbal remedies, can be harmful to the fetus and should not be taken while you are pregnant. It is important to tell your healthcare provider about all of the medications you are taking during your preconception care checkup. Do not stop taking prescription medication until you have talked with your healthcare provider.
Some pregnancy problems may increase the risk of having the same problem in a later pregnancy. These problems include preterm birth, high blood pressure, preeclampsia, and gestational diabetes. However, just because you had a problem in a past pregnancy does not mean it will happen again—especially if you receive proper care before and during your pregnancy.
Preconception healthcare can help to improve fertility and resolve infertility in both men & women ensure a normal, healthy full term pregnancy (prevent miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth) ensure a natural unmedicated birth avoid postnatal depression ensure successful breastfeeding ensure a very happy, healthy baby avoid birth defects
You can have sex as soon as you and your partner want to. Having a baby causes many physical and emotional changes for both partners and it may take some time before you feel comfortable or ready to have sex. Everyone is different, so do not feel pressured or worry that you are not normal if you don't feel ready to have sex. It can help to talk to your partner about any concerns you have.
The earliest your periods can return is six weeks after birth if you are not breastfeeding. If you are breastfeeding your periods will return and you will start ovulating when you are breastfeeding less often and for shorter periods of time. You can become pregnant before your periods return because ovulation (when the ovary releases an egg) occurs about two weeks before you get your period.
You need to start using contraception from three weeks (21 days) after the birth. Don’t wait for your periods to return or until you have your postnatal check before you use contraception as you could get pregnant again before then.If you are fully breastfeeding you can choose to rely on this for contraception.
You don’t need to use any contraception in the first three weeks after the birth as it is not possible to become pregnant in this time. You can use male and female condoms as soon as you want to.You can start to use the contraceptive implant from three weeks after the birth. If you are not breastfeeding then you can use the combined pill, the contraceptive vaginal ring and the contraceptive patch from three weeks after the birth. You can start the progestogen-only pill any time after the birth. It is usually recommended that you wait until six weeks after the birth to start the contraceptive injection because then you are less likely to have heavy and irregular bleeding. It is possible to use it earlier if there are no other alternatives you find acceptable.Unless an IUD or IUS can be inserted within 48 hours of the birth, insertion should be delayed until four weeks after a vaginal or caesarean birth. You can start to use a diaphragm or cap six weeks after giving birth.Natural family planning can be used at any time.
This depends on what you and your partner prefer, your medical history, any problems you had in your pregnancy and if you are breastfeeding.
If you don’t want to get pregnant again for some time you may want to try using one of the following long-acting reversible contraceptives:The contraceptive injection – lasts for 12 weeks (Depo-Provera) or eight weeks (Noristerat)The contraceptive implant – lasts for up to three yearsThe IUD – lasts for 5–10 years depending on typeThe IUS – lasts for five yearsThese methods are very effective. You don’t need to remember to take or use them.If you use the Depo-Provera injection your fertility may not return for several months after your last injection has worn off. Sometimes it can take up to one year for your periods and fertility to get back to normal. So if you want to get pregnant sooner than this, this may not be the best method to choose. The implant, IUS and IUD can be taken out at any time you choose and your normal fertility will return quickly.
If you are absolutely sure you do not want any more children you may wish to consider female sterilisation (tubal occlusion) or male sterilisation (vasectomy). These are permanent methods of contraception. It is not usually recommended for men or women to be sterilised at the time of childbirth, as you need time to be sure that you do not want any more children. There is some evidence to show that women, who are sterilised at the time of the birth, or just after, are more likely to regret this decision later. The failure rate of female sterilisation may also be higher when it is done at this time.
Breastfeeding is also known as lactation. When used as a contraceptive method it is also known as lactational amenorrhoea (LAM). LAM can be up to 98 per cent effective in preventing pregnancy if all of the following conditions apply:You are fully breastfeeding – this means you are not giving your baby any other liquid or solid food orYou are nearly fully breastfeeding – this means mainly breastfeeding your baby and infrequently giving your baby other liquids andYour baby is less than six months old andYou have no periods. The risk of pregnancy increases if:You start breastfeeding less often, orThere are long intervals between feeds – both day and night, orYou stop night feeds and use supplement feeding.Once your baby is over six months old the risk of getting pregnant increases, so even if you don’t have periods and are fully or nearly fully breastfeeding, you should use another contraceptive method.
If you are using a hormonal method of contraception a small amount of hormone will enter the milk, but no research has shown that this will harm your baby.It is usually advised that you wait until the baby is six months old before you start using the combined pill, the contraceptive vaginal ring or the contraceptive patch. This is because these methods contain the hormone estrogen which may reduce your milk flow.Using the IUD does not affect your milk, and copper from it does not get into the milk.
You can find out more about contraception from a doctor in hospital. You and your partner can also visit your general practice or a contraception or sexual health clinic.
Types of Natural Childbirth Techniques
There are a number of different techniques that can be used when trying to have your baby without the use of any medical interventions. The following techniques have been successfully used for many years in aiding natural birth. If you are a candidate for natural childbirth, take time to study the different techniques to determine which might work best for you and your partner. It may also be useful to talk to a doctor or your childbirth Educator about your different options.
In learning how to deal with his own vocal problem, F. M. Alexander (1869-1955) developed a technique for sitting, standing and moving with safety, efficiency, and ease. Anyone, including a pregnant woman, can learn to release muscular tension to increase breathing capacity and restore the body’s original poise and proper posture.
As your body begins to experience lower back pain, balance and digestive problems, and shortness of breath, simple modifications in your movement can help alleviate these symptoms. When the time for delivery arrives, you will be able to breathe better, calm yourself, focus during the birth, help open the cervix during dilation and prepare for effective pushing as the baby comes.
Using self-hypnosis, the mind can be reprogrammed to expect relaxation and pressure rather than fear and pain. This process reduces the amount of adrenaline that is produced, addressing one of the primary causes of dysfunction in labor. A hypno-birth also reduces the need for interventions including cesarean sections.
It is possible for the mind to produce its own anesthesia by training it to do so when needed. As pressure builds in the body it is a signal to the mind to relax even more so as the labor progresses the reaction in the body is one of release rather than fight.
Relaxation allows for the flowing with the birthing process, releasing tension and tightness. As the downward movement is not restricted by constriction of muscles, the labor can be shortened. In turn, this reduces the trauma on the baby, making for a more relaxed newborn.
Admittedly, the idea of using hypnosis can conjure up all kinds of images. However, it is commonly used today therapeutically in a variety of areas in medicine, dentistry, and for personal use. There are a few facts about hypnosis that can make thinking about using this as a means of handling labor and birthing pain easier:
- All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. A hypnotherapist serves as a guide only. A person retains full control and can stay in or come out of a hypnotic state at will.
- Willingness, belief and motivation have influence of the ability of a person to be hypnotized.
- Hypnosis is neither sleep nor unconsciousness – a person can come out whenever they want.
- Stronger-willed people are easier to hypnotize (not the other way around)
- Nothing can be done against the will.
- It is simply a way to direct the inner mind toward something positive. It is not mind control.
- It is not a religious or satanic ritual.
During the process of learning hypnosis for labor and childbirth, a couple is taught how to surround themselves with positive messages and positive people. They are taught to create a positive picture of childbirth and to expect their experience will be wonderful, peaceful, beautiful, and filled with the good things they want in the birth.
Clearing fear is essential to the ability to embrace and allow positive mental processes and is done early in the process of learning hypnosis for childbirth.
As mentioned earlier, fear has negative outcomes in labor and delivery:
- fear creates tension
- tension creates pain
- fear and anxiety increase adrenaline production and intensifies pain
- fear causes a release of catecholamine that make the uterus work harder, creating more difficult and longer contractions
The removal of fear and the use of hypnosis during delivery have many benefits, including:
- hypnosis minimizes resistance of muscles to pain and delivery time is shortened
- hypnosis helps control nausea and vomiting and helps to stop post-partum depression
- hypnosis creates a peaceful birthing experience and peaceful baby
- hypnosis reduces the need for episiotomies, anesthesia, pain drugs and medical interventions
- hypnosis increases the mother’s confidence in her own ability to manage the birth naturally – she’s in control
Using hypnosis during pregnancy, labor and delivery can make everything more relaxed and it enhances the experience.
There are several types and methods of dealing with pain during labor and delivery. Investigate them on this site.
- What’s a Doula, Anyway?
- How Can a Doula Help Me?
- During Labor
Exploring Expectations and Fears of Labor. This is an uplifting and creative one designed to help pregnant women (and partners) identify their preconceived expectations of labor, acknowledge their fears and find their personal coping skills that will serve them in labor.
Labor support provides the assistance to the woman and her partner in preparing and for carrying out their plans for the birth…and stays by the side of the laboring woman throughout the entire labor providing an emotional support, physical comfort measures, an objective viewpoint and assistance to the woman in getting the information which she needs to make good decisions during labor.
A doula is a labor support person who has been trained to offer guidance to the laboring woman. she spends the labor and delivery helping the woman to breathe correctly, recommending positions and activities to help ease the pain of labor, and encouraging the woman with her words and actions.
Most women who hire a doula do so because they are hoping to have a natural birth. They want the doula to guide them through the process and to help to suggest ways to ease their discomfort. They can certainly be helpful should you end up using medication, but their main role is to offer emotional and physical support. They can help you to write your birth plan, to decide on the location of your birth, and to help you to understand your various medical and medicinal options. They will often meet with the couple a few times before delivery, helping you to define your goals. They are able to explain medical procedures and to figuratively and literally hold your hand through the birthing process.
When it’s time for labor, a doula can help you to determine when it’s time to leave for the hospital or the birthing center. They can help you in your house during the early stages of labor, and can help you to check into the hospital. They’ll offer physical support, rubbing your back, helping you to take a shower, and other items. They can also help you to understand what is happening during your birth, particularly if you are birthing in a hospital. Often times, the husband finds it overwhelming to try to support his wife, to be her advocate, and to navigate through the medical environment. The doula’s role is to compliment the husband and to take the pressure off of him so that he doesn’t have to try to perform all of these roles.
Studies have found that women who hire a doula experience a 50% reduction in the number of Cesareanbirths that they experience, 25% shorter labors, a 60% reduction in the request for an epidural, and a 30% reduction in the need for forceps. Research also shows that women who had a doula have less anxiety and more confidence with their baby six weeks after delivery. Particularly if you are considering a natural birth, hiring a doula may be a great decision for you. It alleviates the burden placed on your spouse, and allows the birthing process to be a smoother, gentler experience.

Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is about making mothers ~ strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength.
The benefits of postnatal exercise, Exercising after you have your baby can improve your physical and mental wellbeing. It can:
- Help restore muscle strength and firm up your body
- Make you less tired because it raises your energy level and improves your sense of wellbeing
- Promote weight loss
- Improve your cardiovascular fitness and restore muscle strength
- Condition your abdominal muscles
- Improve your mood, relieve stress and help prevent postpartum depression.
- Stress release (time to focus on yourself)
After childbirth I was amazed how my once-tight tummy looked like a deflated balloon. Don’t panic, this is normal. Over the next few weeks your uterus will naturally contract back to its pre-pregnancy shape.
Breastfeeding will expedite this process, causing the contractions to be stronger and more frequent.
However, I must stress that this alone is not enough to get your prepregnancy body back. Post-natal exercise will speed up the recovery process and build valuable strength your body needs to keep up with the hectic schedule of caring for your newborn. Be patient with yourself. It may take a few months or possibly longer, depending on how much time you can dedicate to working out.
Gentle exercise can generally be started as soon as comfortable after giving birth. Start when you feel up to it. Some women will feel able to start exercising early. Talk with your doctor about when is a good time for you to restart an exercise program.
Six weeks after giving birth, most of the changes that occur during pregnancy will have returned to normal. If you did not exercise during pregnancy, start with easy exercises and slowly build up to harder ones. Keep in mind your lower back and core abdominal muscles are weaker than they used to be. Your ligaments and joints are also more supple and pliable, so it is easier to injure yourself by stretching or twisting too much. Avoid any high-impact exercises or sports that require rapid direction changes.
Studies have shown that vigorous or regular exercise does not have adverse effects on a mother’s ability to successfully breastfeed as long as fluid and caloric intake are maintained. Some research, however, suggests that high-intensity physical activity can cause lactic acid to accumulate in breast milk and produce a sour taste a baby might not like. If you’re breastfeeding, you can prevent this potential problem by sticking to low- to moderate intensity physical activity and drinking plenty of fluids during and after your workout.
The pelvic floor may be adversely affected by pregnancy and childbirth. Most women are taught pelvic floor exercises during pregnancy and these are important to learn correctly and can be resumed immediately after giving birth.
Always consult with your doctor or midwife before starting any postnatal exercise program.
Don’t be too hard on yourself if your exercise plans go awry – you’ll get more time to yourself as your baby settles into a predictable routine. Happy workout with happymom !!
